Karl and Melissa: A Love Story

To tell the complete story of how I fell in love would take an entire novel or two. Maybe one day that will actually happen. For now, we’ll settle for a blog post.

To my regular readers, I apologize for being absent lately. Honestly, the past two months I’ve spent most of my free time talking with my dear boy.

On with the story.
Well, the extremely summarized version of the story.

Karl and I met in my Golden Summer In 2014 when I worked with my brother Derek at BYU Sports Camps. Karl and I lived in the same apartment complex.
His eyes were the best kind of blue I’d ever seen, and they caught my attention.
Slowly over the summer we became friends and did things together. We exchanged cute flirty notes and ate countless Otter Pops on cool, breezy, Sunday evenings. We laughed about sandwiches and ‘buff babies’ and I probed him about ASL and Texas. He was kind and funny and handsome. I was eager and awkward and blatantly obvious when it came to giving hints at my affection. We climbed a mountain together in Mid-July, and as we sat at the top, staring at the sunset, I knew I wanted to end up with someone like him. A boy with quiet confidence and a good heart. A Boy who loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ as much as I do. A boy who stuck to his word. He had impressed me through and through, that Karl Horlacher.

At the end of the summer, he asked me out on our first date!
He picked activities from my ‘Provo Bucket List’ and we spent the entire night talking and laughing as if we were old friends. It was so easy to be myself around him.
I was struck by how natural it felt to be walking around Provo with him. I felt like he was seeing a side of me that I usually keep reserved for closest friends. It seemed like he was opening up parts of his mind that he usually kept tucked away. I felt drawn to him. He seemed interested, and I made it clear that I was interested. But we both knew that I was leaving very soon, so nothing substantial happened.

Through the fall and winter we saw each other a few times, and each meeting was met with sincere hugs and laughter. I genuinely appreciated this boy’s heart, and I knew he appreciated mine. In late March, I was going to be visiting Provo for a job interview. I knew that I wanted to see Karl. I hoped that if I saw him that weekend, it would ‘plant a seed’ so to speak. Haha.
I know, I’m sneaky. But I was fairly certain that I wanted to date him in the summer, so I wanted to have another positive experience with him before I went home for spring semester. So I asked him out on a date, and he cheerfully accepted.

We went to a museum, got ice cream, and watched a movie together that we’d been trying to watch together since last summer. (“Barfi!”. It’s a Bollywood movie about a deaf man, and it’s incredible, in case you were wondering. One of my very favorites.)
We walked to all of these places, and we had plenty of time to talk. That night, he completely surprised me by kissing me for the first time.

He kissed me and kissed me and kissed me.

– and this is where the story is going to start sounding crazy to some people -

We spent the rest of the weekend together, catching up and figuring things out. He came up to Rexburg the next weekend to visit me at Easter. And under my dear Rexburg sky, splattered with stars, he told me that he loved me. It was the first night he was there, which again, completely surprised me. I prayed my guts out that night, and the next seven nights after that. I was certain that my feelings for him were as strong as his were for me, but I’d never said those words out loud. To a boy. In a romantic way. And I was terrified that if I said it, he would take it back or change his mind and I would look foolish. But Sunday morning, we watched the Easter sun rise over a wheat field on a hill in front of the Rexburg temple. He held my hand as we read from the New Testament about the Resurrection. I looked up at him, and I knew I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life.

 I loved him.
I knew he was the one.

It terrified me, but I couldn’t deny what I plainly knew was true. So that night, just before he left back for Provo, I told him that I loved him. He said, “YEEESSSSS!!!” and I felt insanely relieved. The next weekend, we spent together in Provo. One night, I spent hours telling him my entire life story. He listened respectfully, even when I cried through some hard parts. He rubbed my back and told me how strong he thought I was.
I knew I didn’t want to go any farther forward in my life without him with me, and I knew I wanted him with me until I couldn't count the days anymore. I told him all of that. He echoed my feelings. And we knew that this relationship, though brand new, was something rare and special.

The next 6 weeks were Skype calls and novel-length text messages. He skyped me every night to pray and read the scriptures together. On the weekends we talked for hours. I felt my heart stitching closer and closer to this dear boy.

Karl drove out from Utah for my Brother Derek’s wedding on May 15. When I saw Karl for the first time in the hotel, I ran to him and he scooped me up into the happiest hug of my life.
He kissed me right there in front of my whole family. We spent the whole weekend together again, and by then, all my family could see how serious we were about each other, and how real this was. Karl loved my family, and I loved him for wanting to be a part of it.

This past Thursday, the 21 of May, I flew to SLC, for Derek’s Utah reception, but I spent all of my extra time with Karl. At Derek’s reception, Karl walked and talked with my father. Karl told him that He loved me very much and asked for his permission to marry me. My Daddy told Karl that he had his permission, his blessing, his everything. He sees that I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, and that we have potential to make something great of our life together.

After the reception, on the night of May 23, we went back to Karl’s apartment.
We were talking on the couch. Being mushy, talking about the future and how real it was all becoming.

We talked about getting engaged this summer.

He knows that I don’t want a big giant proposal, so he was asking me more about what I wanted. In a round-about way, so that I could still be surprised. I reminded him that I wanted it to be simple and private, and that I didn't want him to spend a bunch of money planning an elaborate scheme. I just wanted him to look me in the eyes and be sincere, and that’s all that mattered to me. He agreed with all of that. We kept talking. His brother called on the phone and we chatted for a bit. Then, after the phone call, we were alone in the living room, being mushy again.
He said, “You really don’t want some big crazy surprise?” I said, “No, I really don’t, it’s totally fine.” He said, “okay!”

And then he reached into his pocket.

And it clicked that he was proposing to me right now.

He was proposing to me right now.

I exclaimed, “wait, what?!”
He was beaming as he got on one knee and opened a gorgeous wooden box. His eyes hit mine to the core. His blue on my brown.

His were misty as he asked, “Melissa, will you marry me?”

I laughed, “YES! A thousand times, yes!” and kissed him.

He gently slipped his grandmother’s ring onto my left ring finger and then swept me up into a giant squeezy hug that said more than words could have even hinted at.
I was laughing in sheer joy. I couldn’t stop smiling, which made it hard to kiss him, but kiss him I did! We were both giddy and hugging and staring at the ring and then giggling and then kissing and I couldn’t even cry, I was too caught up in pure bliss.
Then he got on his knee again and asked me in American Sign Language. I answered back in ASL with the same exact reply as before. A new round of hugs and kisses. New laughs and smiles. I couldn’t stop staring at him.

Everything was perfect.

It was a complete surprise, and exactly what I wanted. He was so proud.

Private, simple, and sincere. Our eyes and hearts and souls all connected to make the most important decision of our lives.

I was even wearing my favorite Koala Sweater! hahaha.

My dear Karl and I will be sealed for our Time on earth, and for all Eternity after that, on September 19 in a temple of God. That’s when our real journey together begins.

I am so thrilled. I feel so loved. This boy is literally better than I ever dared to dream for. I am proud to be his forever. I am proud to have him as mine forever. We’re a good team. I can’t wait to start our life together in a Holy Union.
He is worth every sacrifice and struggle I've faced in order to get to this point. He is worth the wait in so many meanings.

I have been through so. Much. To get where I am now mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. It has been at times, a battle. There were times when I lost hope.
But in Karl I have found every joy I dreamed of when days were dark. And in this boy I see all the goodness I knew was possible in a man of God. Karl is the cumulative representation of the redemption and the mercy I've received throughout my life. A witness of how far I've come and what I've made of my life. He is the bright shining hope of my future, and in him I see the companion who is perfect for me. The partner I need to help me make it back to my Heavenly Father.

For the rest of our lives, Karl and I will climb together.

I could not be more happy or proud of that.

Thank for your love and support along the way, friends. I could not have made it here without you!
And as i have always promised, My engagement to the man of my dreams was announced first here on my blog before any other social media! because i love you all so much!

Schmidt

this talk by Sheri Dew was given at the beginning of the California Young Single Adult conference in August 2012 and it changed my life. It's twenty minutes long, but if you have the time it would be a good thing to spend it on.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoSyjFrpjxQ

also, this is jon Schmidt. and i remember my sister Katrina playing this song on the piano when i was VERY young. i asked her what song it was, and she told me, "Waterfall, but it's really hard." i loved to watch her play it and hear her play it and wanted to play it. but like she said, it was hard. and i was seven. But when Katrina was gone at school or out with friends, i'd practice. I taught myself to play the piano exclusively so i could play this song. i learned the scales and 'hot cross buns' and then i got to work. and every time i sat down at the piano i was playing this song. struggling one single note at a time. i'm sure it was painful to listen to. And when i'd mastered the right hand, i started to teach myself the left, but it was really hard, so i signed up for lessons from a lady in our ward. i went for two months and once i was comfortable playing with my left hand, i quit lessons. i played this song over and over and over until i got it. and ten years later i still never get tired of playing this song. neither do any of the other like, kajillion mormon kids who know this song.
whatever, i knew him first.
anyway, the point of this rant is that I have dreamed of seeing Jon Schmidt perform this piece for as long as i can remember.

And on Thursday i get to.
and i'm really, really, really, really excited.
best birthday present ever.

April showers bring May flowers

This starts out sounding whiny...but it turns around, i promise! haha.

last couple weeks:
Got back to back rejected. that was fun. "still friends". greeaaaaat.
saw Derek and met Abby. Saw Rebecca and a couple of her kids. Saw Donny and Christine and Jonathan. that really was good. Also i liked the drive up to Idaho. I love driving. minus the crazy blizzard in Cedar city, and my bike being frozen to the car. haha
Then I spent a couple days alone here, because i got to the apartment way early. Which i actually liked, because it gave me a couple days to think. and that was good. Then my roommates got here, and they are seriously awesome. I already love them. but i was getting pretty homesick.
I started class. but my best friend Mallorie went home.
a couple weeks ago i applied for an east coast history summer study thing. I would tour the east coast for a month, spending time at all the US and church history site. It was only 4 weeks but counted for like 6 classes and it was $3,000 but that is pretty cheap if you think about it. it included all of my travel, hotel and food expenses. plus a Broadway show. so that's an amazing price, i think. And my American foundations teacher from fall semester was like, "apply early, I'll recommend you and that will higher your chances of getting in!" So i did. But i found out last week that i didn't get in. that sucked.
I tried to start a dating show here at BYU-Idaho. Not a single person signed up online. And everyone I asked around campus in person said something along the lines of "well, that sounds cool, but I'm just really busy. But I'll watch it for sure!" can't watch it if there's no show. hmph. AND THEN. in my child development class i overheard the following conversation:

girl: Yeah, dd you hear about that dating show?
other girl: No, what dating show? here?
g: yeah! It actually seems pretty cool

*My ears perked*

g: It's these three guys that go around asking completely random girls to be on their show. and then once they get like ten girls or something, then they take them out one by one and then they choose only a few to take out on a second date and so on and so on. it sounds totes cute, right?!
og: Yeah! I'd so totally be on that!
G: yeah! you should go watch the first episode, it's on youtube:

Me: wait, what?

G: It's called "BYU-I do" isnt that cute?! I'm so totes gonna watch it

you're kidding me.
you're KIDDING me.

first of all, "BYU-I do"?! why didnt i think of that?! ugh. and really?! like, really? what are the odds that me and 3 stupid guys from Chapman hall had the same idea on the same weekend? they are pretty cute though curses.

And i bombed my first Child development class. But we met our "Family Home Evening Brothers" and they're SO nice. One of them, Shain, had a birthday so we threw him a surprise party. and that was kind of the turning point for me.  I was surrounded by all these great people and i was laughing and happy on the outside, but sulking inwardly. and i thought, "why are you still sad? you've got nothing to be sad about."

My sister Allison texted me a cute picture of Jenna and I hung up 166 pictures in my room. ha.
The next night I finished "Heaven is here" by Stephanie Nielson and honestly, her story is incredible! She went through every hurt you could imagine but she stayed strong and i admire her SO much. Hero. really.

and honestly, i thought of all the trials she endured and i felt really ungrateful for complaining about boys who don't like me or fun trips i didn't get to go on. She faced her struggles with hope. and i want to too.

things started lookin' up.
I helped Donny and Christine paint their new, adorable apartment. I crushed all of my homework assignments. 100% on my Teachings of the living Prophets chapter 1 test. what now prof. Peterson? I even worked out. what?! hahaha mom, i'm sorry for the heart attack i just gave you. AND JENAE ADDED ME ON INSTAGRAM. after seven long months of me sending her a request everyday until she finally blocked me. she finally unblocked me, excepted my request and followed me. happiest moment of my life, y'all.
And then Saturday night my sister Katrina called and gave me a much needed pep talk. thanks dawg, 'twas exactly what i needed. And i think you were exactly who i needed to hear it from.

I love Sundays. they're always good. I was called as a Relief Society Instructor and i gave my first lesson on Sunday. I love to teach. this was literally a quick and direct answer to fervent  prayer. Sunday in general was just a giant answer to prayer. I love my ward (congregation) and my bishop (the leader of the congregation). We met our Home Teachers (two guys who come over once a month to teach us and who are kind of like our go-tos when we need someone to drive us around or fix a flat tire or anything really. helper friends.) ours are Jimmy and Eric. I asked Jimmy what his name was and he said, "Jimmy Donkin" I laughed. because i laugh at everything. and he gave me dagger eyes. So i said, "I'm sorry. that was rude...i didnt mean it like that. it's a cool name! Donkin! that's awesome! It sounds cooler than Hansen....okay I'm gonna stop talking..."
and then after the lesson when he and Eric were about to leave, i had forgotten Jimmy's last name, so i asked, "Hey Jimmyeatworld, what's your last name again?"
dagger eyes.
Jimmy: "Donkin"
my roommate Madison: "Dunkin? like Dunkin Donuts?"
Jimmy: "No. Donkin"
Me: "like...hee haw! donkey...Donkin..."

daggers. daggers everywhere.

I can't help it, people.

Yesterday i got a happy text from Allison, and a "keep your chin up" package from Rebecca. I love my sisters. They're seriously perfect for me. In the package was a bunch of cute bright things, a sweet note, candy and this shirt. Holla. "Uncle Si" from Duck Dynasty. mah dang favorite. It says "Redneck of the Year" ad i've been wearing it for like 24 hours already. hahahaha. please enjoy this real cute webcam selfie i just took:

Last night was our ward's opening social get together thang. I met a lot of people, and have i mentioned that i have an uncanny ability to remember names?  not like, just their names. but when i hear a name and see a face together, i usually remember it. we did this really awkward but super fun speed dating thing at the social last night, and i can now name every single boy in our ward. YES. champion.

on a deeper note,
Thank you to those of you who thought of me the other day. i have absolutely felt your prayers. It's been humbling, really. To see people's faith in action. and to know that people are praying for me is a really tender thing. So thank you, it has made a huge difference. I love you all! really.

also, here's a couple pictures of Jenae that i have hanging right above my desk so that i can look at them all day everyday and laugh whenever i need to. I hope they brighten your day as much as they do mine! hahaha

lololololololololol

ohhh my. i seriously die every time i see this. also, one hundred dollars who can guess what my dad was watching when this picture was taken.

and my personal favorite:

I'm so glad that i finally caught someone making that face on camera. She learned it from me. I stole it from a similar face that Derek makes.

good riddance, April.

Missionaries

I went on facebook today and went through my friends list and counted all the people who are either on their mission, or have gotten their assignment.

47.

47 of the best people on earth. 47 of my favorite people. maybe that's not a big number to you, but it's a HUGE number to me. if the age for missionaries hadn't been lowered almost six months ago, the number would be 15.

I love these young men and women who have willingly given up 18-24 months of their lives to teach and serve and testify. I'm so proud of them. and I look up to them so much. I'm trying to write them all letters, but i can only buy so many stamps before my bank account goes dry. I just love them so much. I can't wait to see this number grow! and i can't wait to see the effects of this.

I just love missionaries, okay? they're so excited about Christ. they're so full of charity. they're so eager!

I know that they're doing a good thing. I know that they're teaching truth.
I'm so grateful for missionaries!

Sister Holden (pt.2)

I have like 50 posts saved up because i didnt want to post too much. But I'm paying $3 a month for tihs. you suck, google. But anyway. Imma post as much as i want! deal wif et!

so.
Janelle got her mission call. on sunday. well technically Saturday  but no one checked their mailbox until sunday. We stayed after church for choir, and then i'd driven all the way home and started to help my dad with dinner when Janelle called me:
Janelle: Hey, where'd you go?
Me: oh, I'm already home, are you guys doing something?
Her: well actually, I'm holding my mission call right now
me: WHAT?! are you serious?!
Her: Yes! I'm holding it RIGHT NOW!
Me: okay, I'm leaving, I'm coming.

done. It was the fastest i've ever gotten to her house. ever. 20 minutes compared to the usual 35, but i SWEAR i was going the speed limit...
and i cried the whole way there, because I love Janelle, and I'm going to miss her, but i am SO proud of her.

We waited for all her family to come, and then she opened it.

and she's going to BRAZIL. she gets to go to the Brazil MTC, too. She'll speak Portuguese and she leaves in August. which is forever from now. But also so soon.

It still hasn't sunken in yet.
She is SO excited, as made apparent from these pictures, haha.
I'm too happy for her to describe. She's such an example, and I absolutely love her.
for so many reasons, this just being the most recent one: that she has willingly chosen to give up 18 months of her life and pay her own way so that she can go to Brazil and serve the Lord by teaching and helping His people live happier, better, more fulfilling lives.
I love missionaries.
they're incredible.

Congratulations, girl!

Lifting a Bus

This Month in the Ensign there is a story called "My Lifeline Was Prayer" By Phyllis Bishop. The story is one i have heard my whole life. It's of my great grandfather, James Alfred Hansen. My father's grand father.
He was a bus driver in a tiny town in Nevada in the early 1930s. While turning a corner, something with the brakes malfunctioned and the bus went off a cliff into a ravine. Phyllis, who was in third grade, was caught under the bus, and had been scalped. Her side of the story is in the above article. My grandfather and Father have told me the side of James Alfred, though. His side is also inspiring and i wanted to share some snippets from it.

Phyllis mentions that her uncle, my great grandfather, prayed for divine help and then got a new fence post to lift the bus.
What she didn't say, was that that prayer was an urgent, plea for a miracle. Alfred wasn't strong enough to pull that fence post out of the ground. I've seen my dad put those kind of fence posts in the ground, and it's extremely hard work. The posts are probably 6-7 feet tall, but 2 of those feet are buried firmly in the ground. Alfred told the older boys that he was going to lift the post from the ground, shove one end under the bus, and then lean on the other side to lift up the bus, and when he did, that they should go under and carefully get Phyllis out. He waked over to the post, wrapped his arms around it and with what could only have been God given strength, he pulled the post out of the ground. Then with his bare hands he tore off the barbed wire still attached to the post, and carried the post to the bus. Alfred shoved one end under the bus, and again with what literally had to have been divine aid, lifted a school bus several feet off the ground, just enough for the older boys to get Phyllis.

I can only imagine the kind of faith required for such a feat.
and I can only imagine the relief that swept over Alfred to see his neice alive after such a horrible accident.
Phyllis' recovery and her rescue were absolutely miracles.

I love my family, and I'm so grateful to be part of such an incredible legacy. Also, Pahranagat Valley is full of angels. FULL of them. I've felt it. I love my family. and I'm eternally grateful for miracles.

My Grandpa was in first grade and on the bus when this happened. His dad was driving the bus. Phyllis Bishop is his cousin. He still remembers  that day, and tells the story with the highest respect for his father and with awe toward all that God can do.

The Burg

So i had planned this great sassy post about everything I've learned and how much weight I've gained and the lack of a boy in my life. But I'm feeling pretty humbled today. So my sassy post can wait until i get home. which is a weird thought...

Tuesday i turned in my final paper in my parenting class and then took my American foundations final. no curve, and i got a 92% thank you very much. and i stayed up until about five finishing a bunch of other essays. one science paper which was pretty easy, that got done before midnight. and then i wrote my final essay for Book of Mormon on Shiblon, because he's my favorite person in the whole book.
My humanities (Beauty and Creativity) final was in 3 parts: a 35 question multiple choice test which i took in the testing center on Tuesday morning, an essay that we wrote on our own and handed in on the last day of class, and the final music and art quiz in class. and only in class. He played songs and we wrote down the title, composer and style.

well like i said, i was up until five writing my essays. I took a nap and was going to wake up at 6:30 to study for my humanities final. so i did. but i fell asleep while studying. and i slept through my alarm - which i literally NEVER do. i woke up at 9:30. my class started at 9:00. I sat straight up like they do in the movies, looked at my watch and started sobbing. 2/3 of my humanities final down the drain...so i put some jeans on, slipped on my crocs and literally ran to class but on the way there i saw the girl that sits next to me, Ashley  and she was like, "hey, what happened?! He let us go when we finished..."
I wanted to flop onto the ground and die.
i ran to his office, and before i could even open my mouth he looked me up and down and and said, "come to my 10:15 class and you can take it then" with a pitying smile.
It was probably because tears were frozen to my cheeks, my hair was a leftover pony from Tuesday. whatever the reason he decided to be so uncharacteristically angelic, I'm grateful for it. I shook my head yes and somehow got a thank you out before i scrambled to the bathroom to cry with relief and fix my self.

So i took the test, pretty sure i only got two wrong. and that was because i couldn't remember if Millet's 'Gleaners' was realism or not. pretty sure it was though. and because for the life of me i could not remember who wrote "Jupiter". It was Holst -_-
then i had Book of Mormon.

so my teacher, brother Garmon is amazing. like, seriously amazing. I can't even begin to explain.

I love that class for a lot of reason. I love that my row makes a perfect four part harmony, and that we're all loud singers. I love that I've never been this into the scriptures before. I love that Brother Garmon loves my dad -even though they've never met - because my dad farms the church's raisins. I love that I've become such good friends with Terrin and Tyler who sit on either side of me, especially Terrin, she's incredible.
I thought i knew the scriptures pretty well before college. I thought i understood them and i thought i read them often enough.
nope
nope
nope
I have learned SO much, and felt so much and i have a greater belief of the Book of Mormon's truths now than i ever did before. It's so insane to me that this much happiness and peace and understanding can come from one book. I love the Bible more now than i ever have, i understand it so much better and i see so clearly how the Bible and the Book of Mormon work together as two testaments of Jesus Christ.

So my teacher.
He's moving to Salt Lake to take an amazing Job there, and when he told us that he wouldn't be teaching anymore, I was devastated. I had already planned out that i was gonna take first half of Book of Mormon with him next semester and the New testament after that. And then we had our lesson, and they're always amazing but this one was crazy good. I'm taking second half of the Book of Mormon, So today we read and discussed the very last chapter. Moroni 10.
It. was. so. powerful.

Because it was the last day of class, it just made us tender. There is a part in the chapter that talks about gifts. Brother Garmon went around the room giving examples of people's gifts, and when he bore his testimony at the end of class, there literally was not a single dry eye in the room. (there's about 25 of us on any given day) And he shook each of our hands as we left the room for the last time. I never ever thought i would cry because a class ended. haha. but i did! but they were sweet tears, and one of my favorite songs popped into my head:

"In the most sincere prayer I've ever prayed, I thank my God for each and every day."

and the whole way home - i know this sounds cheesy- everything looked really pretty. the sky was foggy and it was freezing cold, and all the grass and flowers are dead haha but everything looked beautiful. and right then i was just so overcome! I''m so thankful for he time I've had at BYUI!
I love it here. I love the people, i love the school, i love the spirit here and my classes. and i love the cold. and my ward - I LOVED my ward. I loved my bishop and my relief Society president, Andrea, for being so good to me even though i was an awful counselor and visiting teacher. I loved teaching relief society, but don't tell any of my future bishops that...and i loved the dorms, and the temple, and the chance to grow so much, and be with such amazing people.
I love Rexburg!
I'll miss it for sure.
This is right where i was supposed to be this fall, I don't doubt that for a second.

aaaaand done.
